Everyone's always looking for something to keep their plastic looking good. I think I've found it, it's a silicone based detailing liquid used by professionals. It's called "Ultra Cote" made by Malco products. This stuff works, mud comes off easier and it stays on longer than your typical "Armor All". But, you guessed it, it's expensive, 5 gallon pail, about $100. Works nice on interior of cars and tires too! I don't think they every guessed a quad rider would find this stuff. Thank you for your time, Chad Harrison Huron, Oh. 2000 DS 650, 1985 ATC 350X.
Tip #2
Have you ever had to scrub off that caked on mud that soaks into your plastics and causes them to fade? Welll instead of buying the other stuff the other guy rcommends you can simply just put Rain-X (the invisible winshield) stuff for car windows on your plastics. After a long day of riding in mud just hit your plastics with a hose and it will come fight off.

Parts for Redcat ATVs are readily available both online and from the many US Redcat distributors. As the Redcat ATVs are manufactured in Taiwan by Stannic Motor Spares Manufacturing, makers of Kazuma, spare parts are interchangeable with any of the Kazuma line of ATVs. Importers of Kazuma including Redcat Motors, Yamoto Motors, Malibu, and Jackel Motorsports. Any one of these company`s distributors and websites have parts contacts to order replacement parts. Many different models of the Redcat ATVs have the same engines, carburetors etc also making the parts interchangeable and readily available. Many parts may also be interchangeable with parts as Redcat ATVs use knock-off designs. ATV HISTORY:
The ATV (all-terrain vehicle), also known as three and four-wheelers, was created in Japan as a farm-to-town vehicle in rugged mountainous areas. The three-wheeled ATV proved to be a good way to travel off-roads and soon became a recreational vehicle, providing transportation to areas that cars and SUVs can`t access. Japanese manufacturers soon realized that America was a good market for the ATV.
The ATV first appeared in America in the early 70`s, it was promoted and sold as a recreational vehicle designed to provide "thrills" for the rider. This is still its primary use today. People quickly found that the ATV was a useful machine to move through places not accessible with trucks, four-wheel drives, or other vehicles. The ATV has become a popular hunting and fishing vehicle.
The US 90 was the first ATV made specifically for off-road recreation. The line of ATVs was quickly growing in usefulness and technology. Ironically, it was the ATV owners who found and invented creative new applications for the ATVs, and helped shape their growth and design over the years.
The ATV owners found that ATVs offered a wide variety of uses that even engineers never fathomed. ATVs are less expensive to operate then pickup trucks or tractors, smaller and more maneuverable than either one, and possess a remarkably lighter footprint (with their low-pressure tires) that is easy on sensitive terrain. ATVs soon became vital tools in farming, ranching, industry, agriculture, fishing, hunting and means of mobility for the disabled. In many cases, ATVs do jobs that are impossible for other vehicles and 4x4s.
The 1960s: Prototyping the ATC
In 1967, American asked R&D Ltd. for a new product that dealers could sell when motorcycle sales were slow in the winter. The project was headed by a small group of engineers that eventually developed their first ATV, the US 90.
Two, three, four, five and even six-wheeled configurations were examined, but the three-wheel concept delivered the best results. It can deal well with snow, mud and many slippery conditions a two-wheeler can`t, while providing more maneuverability than other concepts.
The 1970s: The World`s First ATC
Though the ATC was mainly a recreational vehicle through the `70s, farmers and ranchers were beginning to use the ATC as a tool to make their lives easier. Engineers followed their machines into the field, gathering data to guide the machine`s natural adaptation to a rapidly growing market.
Utility and racing were the two largest arenas for ATVs in the `80s. The popularity of utility usage was easy to understand. On the farm, a tractor cost much more to purchase and maintain, and an ATV uses 8 percent of the fuel necessary to fuel a tractor. Utility usage exploded in the `80s and ATVs became multi-purpose machines, serving both utility and recreation purposes.
The 1982 ATC200E, a.k.a. "Big Red", had more of everything necessary to get a host of jobs done. Its 192cc engine and five-speed dual-range gearbox cranked out more power to make chores such as hauling, towing, spraying, seeding and fertilizing easier. An electric starter made starting the day as easy as pushing a button. Dual racks and a 9.2-liter storage box made carrying equipment, tools, bales of hay and other agricultural chores quicker and easier. In 1984 Big Red added a reverse gear and its drive chain was replaced with shaft drive for extra durability and less maintenance.
In `83 the ATC200X proved that four-strokes could run with the best of them. The 200X combined a high-performance 192cc engine, five-speed gearbox and manual, motorcycle-style clutch with long-travel suspension and sporty chassis geometry that was used for racing rather than ranching.
In 1984, increasing ATV sales led to an increase in ATV accidents, followed by a thorough investigation by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). In 1986, CPSC statistics suggested that most ATV accidents were due to improper rider behavior that ignored the distributor`s warnings. No flaws were found in the ATVs themselves.
Then on April 28, 1988, the U.S. ATV distributors entered into an unprecedented 10-year agreement with the CPSC called the Final Consent Decree. Under the agreement, the ATV industry made a $100 million commitment to expand existing ATV safety programs. Free training and training incentives were offered to owners and purchasers of new ATVs. Distributors also agreed that they would no longer market three-wheeled ATVs or repurchase any unsold three-wheel models from dealer inventory.
From golf courses to hog farms, hunting to hauling, nothing on wheels had ever been as useful, durable, efficient and affordable, on the job or on the weekend, as the ATV.
Redcat FX-150 is an adult sized, fully automatic 4-stroke all-terrain vehicle. In a modern sport design, this quad can terrain sand, mud and rocks. This unit will exceed 20mph, the point at which a helmet, boots and gloves are absolutely necessary for your safety. It should be capable of a top speed of between 30-40mph. This will vary a lot depending on the altitude of operation, weight of the operator, and terrain it is driven over. This is not a racing machine, it is a rugged off-road recreational vehicle and is far more useful in rocky, loose terrain than in a racing contest.

There are many popular 110cc ATVs made in Taiwan on the market today including Redcat, Kazuma, Yamoto, and Malibu. Vento`s are made in the USA. There are also many companies importing Chinese ATVs into the US with no brand name at all. Many of these units are very similar in features and performance. The Chinese ATVs are very reliable overall and spare parts are easy to get and often interchangeable.
None of the Chinese ATVs come with a manufacturer`s warranty against defects. They are warrantied by the individual importer and warranties vary widely. Coverage ranges from 3 months parts on the engine only to 6 months parts on everything. Less expensive units that appear very similar often have a much shorter and more restrictive warranty.
When selecting an ATV, choose one with a brand name. Many are sold with no actual brand name - only a model number. If your distributor folds, you will not be able to find another distributor who can cross reference parts for your bike. No one else will recognize the model name of the unit even though it may be from the same Chinese manufacturer with readily available parts.
The Redcat KMX-50
is a 4 stroke, semi-automatic ATV for children between the ages of 6 and 9. The weight capacity of the unit is 75 to 80 pounds. It has no reverse gear.
The KMX-50
imported by Redcat Motors of Jefferson, Louisiana and comes with a 6 month warranty on parts. It also comes with many safety features including:
Kill switch
Headlight
Speed Restrictor (Governor): You can adjust this down to 5 MPH while your child is learning to ride the ATV.
Extra large brake for fast stopping.
Emergency Engine Cut Off rear control. Attach a cord to the auto cutoff attachment and walk behind the child while riding. Pull the cord to cut of the engine in case of emergency.
The quad’s power and speed must be set to match the child’s capability at all times.
The parent is the only person responsible for the child’s safety. By allowing the child to ride a quad, the parent accepts that this is his sole responsibility and risk. The governor on the quad should be set to allow the child to travel only at a walking pace while learning to ride. The area in which the child is allowed to ride must be free of obstacles that could be a danger to the child and free of people and animals that could be injured. As the child’s capability increases, the quad’s speed can gradually be increased but always only to a safe level. The Redcat 50 is unique in that its gearbox can be locked into first gear for beginners, thereby driving like an automatic vehicle.
When the child has more experience, the gearbox can then be locked into second gear by replacing the gear lever and moving it into second gear, then removing the lever again. This way the quad will again function like an automatic vehicle. For older and more experienced children, the gear lever can be left on, giving the quad four semi-automatic gears. This unique design will take the child from beginner to expert, at which time she/he graduates to the next size quad.
Remember: Safety First!
To help you ride and operate the quad safely, here is some advice you should heed. Only you can protect yourself. Your safety and the safety of minors in your care is your responsibility.
Take instruction and make certain you are fully aware of – and able to operate – the vehicle’s controls.
Ride under the instruction of a competent teacher until you are an experienced rider.
Pay attention to and obey the warning labels on the vehicle. If they become faded or are removed, replace them immediately.
Always keep both hands and both feet securely on the ATV.
Always wear an approved helmet that fits snugly as well as eye protection, gloves, a longsleeved jacket and long pants.
These vehicles are designed and manufactured for off-road use only. It is illegal and unsafe to use this machine on any public street, road or highway, tarred, dirt, paved or cement.
Never operate the ATV on paved, tarred or cement surfaces.
Never carry passengers, as this alters the handling characteristics dangerously.
Never exceed the recommended load capacity. Cargo should be properly distributed and securely attached. If carrying a load, allow greater distances for braking and reduce your speed, especially if pulling a small trailer. Overloading or improper loading can cause mechanical failure, loss of control and unnecessary danger.
Keep loose clothing and long hair well out of the way of moving parts.
Check local riding laws and regulations before operating this machine.
Check local environmental laws and respect them. Redcat urges you to keep the environment clean, safe and beautiful for all to enjoy, including yourself.
Riding an ATV is serious; it can be hazardous to operate. A collision or rollover can occur quickly, often with serious consequences. Even in routine maneuvers such as turning, riding over obstacles and on sloping ground or across water, mud or loose surfaces, the quad handles differently from other vehicles.
Never attach unauthorized accessories to the ATV.
Never attempt stunts, jumps, wheelies or other tricks.
Never ride faster than your skill or conditions permit.
Never ride when tired or after consuming alcohol or drugs or while experiencing any dangerous medical condition.
Inspect your ATV each time you use it to make sure there are no mechanical faults or problems with tires, brakes or controls. Your ATV must be in safe operating condition at all times, with sufficient oil, gas, and brake fluid and tire pressure.
Always follow inspection and maintenance procedures as recommended.
Never use your ATV in flowing water or in water deeper than 5 inches.
Always use the recommended tires and pressures to reduce the risk of tire failure.
Always turn the engine OFF when refueling.
Don’t run the engine in an enclosed area —THIS CAN BE FATAL.
Engine oil from a recently run motor can be very hot. When draining oil for an oil change, be careful.
Be sure to replace fuses with ONLY the correct ones; using an incorrect fuse can cause a fire.
When checking battery fluid, remember that a spark could cause the battery to explode. Switch the engine and power OFF and avoid sparks.
Never put your feet on the ground when the vehicle is starting off or moving.
It is your responsibility to ensure that the ATV is properly and safely ridden and maintained.
People should not operate an ATV beyond their physical or mental limits or capabilities.
Keep the Owner’s Manual in a safe place on the vehicle or under the seat at all times.
While you are learning to ride, use an ATV only on level, open ground away from people.
Obey government laws at all times.
Contact your dealer about anything related to the ATV that you do not understand or need advice about.
If you allow an untrained person to use the ATV, you are endangering his/her life and the lives of others.
Check that the ATV throttle, accelerator and cables are free and working. A jammed throttle can cause an expensive and injurious accident.
REDCAT cannot be held responsible for your lack of knowledge. If you don’t know, ask your dealer. You ride at your own risk.
In some countries ATVs with 50cc or smaller engines cannot be driven by those aged 6 and under.
Riders under age 16 should ride only with adult supervision and only after training.
All riders should take a course of safety instruction.
Never use gasoline (petrol) to clean the ATV.
A slight spark could cause a fatal explosion. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby when working on the ATV.
Excessive “play” or slippage on a chain drive can cause the chain to break which could, in turn, cause a serious accident.
“Grabbing,” shuddering or lack of braking ability could mean there is a serious brake problem. This must be fixed before riding or serious injury could result.
The high-tension wire from the CDI unit to the sparkplug generates extremely high voltage and can cause a serious or fatal shock if touched with the power on.
Don’t touch any part of the engine, exhaust or silencer until it has cooled down.
Don’t siphon toxic liquids such as fuel or brake fluid by mouth or allow them to remain on your skin.
Wipe up IMMEDIATELY any oil or grease that could cause you to slip or lose control of the ATV.
Don’t allow animals or children to be around an unattended ATV.
Remember: MANY PEOPLE HAVE LOST FINGERS OR LIMBS that were pulled into moving parts, especially chains. DO NOT WORK ON THE ATV WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING.
If, despite following all these precautions, you are injured, seek medical attention immediately.
*This list of safety precautions was compiled by Redcat to increase your safety awareness and to improve your safe enjoyment of your ATV.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TEACHING TECHNIQUES:
*This advice especially relates to children on smaller ATVs but applies equally to beginners of all ages.
Your student’s safety depends on your commitment to take the time necessary to fully educate him/her on the proper operation of the ATV. Remember that proper instruction before your student begins to ride is just as important as proper instruction and supervision while riding. Please go through this manual with your student page by page. Fully explain all of the instructions, requirements and warnings it contains. Be sure to put as much emphasis on safety precautions as on proper operational techniques. Question your student as you go through the manual to ensure s/he understands what you are saying.
Following is a step-by-step guide to help make your student’s first use of the ATV safe and enjoyable. Before you begin to use this guide, however, be sure you have reviewed the vehicle features and riding techniques described in the earlier parts of the manual. REDCAT strongly urges that you use this guide to teach each student whom you let ride the ATV. Be sure to take breaks as the student becomes tired or his/her attention starts to wander. Full attention at all times is needed to safely operate any motorized vehicle, including this ATV.
STEP 1: PROPER CLOTHING & PROTECTIVE GEAR
The first step to safe riding is proper protection of the rider. Your student should always wear a helmet, eye protection, gloves, long pants, a long-sleeved shirt or jacket and boots. Make sure your student is not wearing any loose-fitting clothes. Loose belts, scarves, etc., can get caught in moving parts and cause personal injury. Even in hot weather, make sure the student wears long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. These not only protect against abrasiveinjuries but also help reduce fatigue which comes from loss of body heat caused by exposure to the wind.
STEP 2: FAMILIARIZATION WITH THE VEHICLE
Your student should become completely familiar with the names and functions of all controls. Demonstrate operation of the controls if necessary. Ask the student to do such things as “Apply the brakes. Turn off the engine,” etc. Practice this exercise until the student can operate all of the controls without hesitation and without looking at the controls. Review the instructions with your student until she/he knows all the items that should be checked. Give specific examples of things to look for.
STEP 3: STARTING OFF AND STOPPING
To help your student develop confidence, she/he should PRACTICE FIRST WITH THE ENGINE OFF, as follows:
Have student sit on ATV.
Instruct student to keep his/her eyes straight ahead while you slowly push the vehicle from behind. This will give the student the “feel” of riding a moving vehicle.
As you push the ATV, instruct your student to steer straight ahead and perform operations such as stopping the vehicle and turning OFF the engine switch while moving. Watch your student closely to make sure she/he is operating the controls correctly and without looking at them.
As you approach the end of the practice area, tell your student to stop the vehicle. You should drag the rear end of the ATV around so you can push it straight ahead in the opposite direction.
Practice with the engine OFF until your student gets the “feel” of using the brakes and can stop the vehicle and turn OFF the engine switch without hesitation and without looking at the controls.

Proper Scooter maintenance is crucial to getting the most out of your scooter. You should always consult your owner manual as certain things such as fuel mixture or tire pressure may vary from scooter to scooter. If the information presented here contradicts your owner manual, then you should trust the manufacture and abide by their specs.
Furthermore we remind scooter enthusiasts that although our gas scooters are toys, they can be dangerous if not respected. Please follow safe riding practices and ALWAYS wear protective gear.
Before operating your electric scooter:
• Make sure the tires are inflated properly. Small tires loose air pressure quickly and must be aired frequently. Most small tires can accept air pressure to 85 psi. This allows the tire to properly contact the surface and keeps the tube from rotating inside the tire during braking and acceleration. If the tube rotates, the valve stem will possibly be cut or torn from the inner tube. This will require replacement of the inner tube.
• Charge the battery. Batteries should be charged frequently, especially after prolonged usage that runs the battery down. Allow the batteries to cool for an hour or more before charging. Heat will damage batteries and it is helpful to keep batteries as cool as possible during use or charging.
• Keep the right tension on your drive belt (or chain) during use. A loose drive belt will allow the teeth to slip and wear at an excessive rate. Failure of the belt will occur due to slippage or the heat generated due to improper tension. The belt can be adjusted by moving the rear tire forward or aft. Check your specification, but look for approximately one-half to one-quarter inch gap when pressing against the middle of the span. It is important to prevent slippage.
• Do not ride electric scooters through water or mud, or even on wet grass since water can cause failure of the electrical components! Electric scooters are meant to be ridden on dry hard surfaces.
The following subjects are addressed in Maintenance
Fuel and oil Mixture:
Your scooter usually uses a 2-stroke engine for power. A 2-stroke engine was chosen for it's excellent power to weight ratio. A 2-stroke engine does not require that you ever change the oil, however it does require that you mix a quality grade 2-stroke oil with the gasoline prior to filling your scooters gas tank. This ensures that your engine will remain lubricated and give you reliable service.
To accomplish this you can buy 2-stroke oil at almost any auto parts store or hardware store. The oil and gas are the mixed together in a separate container before filling the scooter. The mixture should be done at a 25:1 ratio (See ratio chart below). Mixing the gas and oil too lean can cause the engine to run too hot resulting in permanent engine damage. Mixing the gas and oil too rich will cause decreased performance and result in a fouled Spark Plug. By strictly following the 25:1 ratio you can be assured maximum performance from your scooter.
25:1
Gallons of Gas Ounces of 2 stroke oil
1 5
2 10 1/4
3 15 1/2
4 20 1/2
5 25 1/2
Spark Plug:
The spark plug is a crucial and vulnerable part on your 2-stroke engine. Your spark plug can be located on the top of the engine under the protective rubber boot. Your scooter comes with a tool kit containing a spark plug wrench for easy removal.
The spark plug must be clean, and must be replaced promptly when signs of wear begin to show. The condition of the spark plug can tell you a lot about how your motor is running. If the electrode is white, that can be a sign that your scooter is running too hot. This can be a result of either running too lean, or that the fuel and oil mixture is too lean. If you are running your scooter to rich then your spark plug may be black, covered with gas, oil, or carbon. Another common problem is that the spark plug gets clogged up with carbon and/or oil and "fouls". This should be checked by assuring the electrode has a clean gap of .023 in.
Air Filter:
The air filter is used to clean the air going into the engine. Periodic cleaning of this filter is recommended to protect your gas scooter engine against the damaging effects of dirt and abrasive particulates. Your air filter can be located on the front of the engine and the protective cover can be removed with one screw. When the protective cover is removed the air filter is revealed. You can also see the small workings of the choke and butterfly valve. The filter should be free from dirt and grease and appear clean like the one shown on the right. If there are contaminants on the filter it can be cleaned in a container of gasoline. Allow the filter to dry before re-installing it into your gas scooter.
Chain:
The chain on your scooter should be lubricated before every ride. The chain should also be checked for tightness on a regular basis. If the chain is too loose a popping sound can be heard and the scooter will jerk under acceleration, or the chain will just jump off altogether.. If the chain is too tight it will be noisy and bind, this can be felt by pushing the scooter with the motor off.
Throttle:
There are two main types of scooter throttles. One is a twist type, and the other is a hand throttle. Although the throttles are different in operation, they are essentially mechanically the same. When the rider applies the throttle, a cable carries this motion down to the engine. For continued smooth operation it is important to keep this cable clean and free of obstructions. Should the throttle begin to feel loose and sloppy, the slack can be adjusted on the cable at the handlebars. Simply loosen the lock nut and adjust the cable tension via the adjustment screw. Once the desired tension is achieved retighten the lock nut.
Brakes:
The brake on your gas scooter is a cable actuated drum brake. This style brake has proven well over time and is very simple to maintain. The rear brake has two main adjustments. The easiest of the two is the adjustment on the handbrake itself. This adjustment has two simple steps. To change the tension on the cable merely back off the locking nut and screw the adjustment screw in or out accordingly. Once the desired tension is achieved re-tighten the locking nut. Further adjustment can be made at the brake drum itself. This task is easiest with two people. First, loosen the adjustment at the handlebar hand brake and screw it all the way in. Next go to the rear brake and loosen the Cable Clamp. Once loose, pull back on the cable and have the second person push forward on the Brake Cable Lever (push hard, you are pushing against a tight spring action). While pushing the lever forward and pulling the cable back, quickly tighten the cable clamp. Additional minor adjustments can be made where the cable meets the rear brake.
Carburetor:
The carburetor has many adjustments on it and it is recommended that these adjustments to be made by experienced persons only, however we will point out the major points. The carburetor is responsible for pumping the fuel and mixing it with the air at a precise measurement. The carburetor does this with very small diaphragms, orifices and ports, which are easily clogged by contaminants. This is why is extremely important that you use only clean new fuel in your gas scooter.
Primer:
When the scooter is brand new, been run out of gas, been sitting for a long period or is very cold, it may be necessary to prime the carburetor before attempting to start it. This is accomplished with the primer pump bowl located at the bottom of the carburetor. Simply press and release this pump several times until gas can be seen flowing through the clear gas return line to the fuel tank. This will help start the scooter under the aforementioned conditions, however if this is done once the scooter has warmed up it may induce flooding.
Idle:
If the scooter will not idle or idles too fast, an adjustment screw is provided next to the choke. Turning this screw clockwise will increase the idle speed. Turning the screw counterclockwise will decrease the idle speed. Remember that an idle speed that is too fast can be dangerous.
Possible Problems and suggested solutions
Power system will not charge
In this situation we will assume that the battery has been charged or allowed to stand for several hours (a battery will normally self-charge up to a point and make the scooter power up for a fair distance). There are generally two main suspects:
1) First suspect a loose or broken connection. Take the top or deck off to see the wiring and inspect it for any loose or broken connections on the battery, switch, controller, etc.
2) Second suspect the controller box has failed. Since the controller is the heart of the system it can fail in many ways to prevent current from being supplied to the motor.
3) Other less likely suspects can be:
• A battery that is completely open, supplying no current and possible even testing as having no voltage. It can be very briefly shorted with a wire to see if an arc is produced, revealing current is present. See Below for more advises on batteries.
• It is also possible to have a bad brake lever or throttle since both have wiring and switches or variable controls. The brake lever has a power cut-off switch. The throttle variably controls the speed of the scooter.
• The scooter On/Off switch can be defective. Without a good switch the scooter has no power, but the test of this is the power light. Does the power light come on when the switch is activated to the ON position?
After fully charging, powers only for short distance use.
Suspect the battery charger or the battery as the primary cause of short distance riding after a lengthy or full charge. If your battery charger does not have charging indicator lights then you may not be charging the battery at all if the charger is defective.
The battery may be self-charging to only about 60% on it's own. If the battery is getting old then it may not be able to hold a full charge and the battery will need replacement. When suspected you can very briefly arc across the battery terminals with an insulated wire to see if it produces a nice arc. It is also possible to test some individual battery 12volt cells using 12volt motors or lights that will show you the available current capability. Is the 12volt light dim on a charged battery? Does the 12volt motor run slowly when connected to the cell? Similar type tests can be performed using a 24volt battery cell, too. WARNING! Batteries contain acid that can explode, or the vapors ignite from an arc. Batteries produce current and voltage that can burn you when a shorted circuit occurs. Be absolutely sure you know what you are doing before trying any tests to eliminate a component from consideration of being defective!!!
You can take the battery to a shop capable of testing the battery under a loaded condition. Fully charge the battery and carefully remove it. Let a technician determine the condition of the battery for you. A high quality Battery charge helps to prevent over charging the battery and increase the life expectancy of your battery.

Kazuma / Redcat SFX-110 ATV Product Review
4-Bolt Pattern
3-Bolt Pattern
The Kazuma is also sold under the name “Redcat”, the quads are almost exactly the same and come with the exact same engine. The only difference we have found between the two brands is that the Redcat comes with a 4 –bolt hub pattern for the rear wheels, as compared to the Kazuma’s 3-bolt hub pattern.
During our search for this entry level quad that was fun and definitely affordable, we were lucky enough to find a local dealer with both a Kazuma 100-SX and Redcat SFX-100 and after bringing them home and taking a good look at them, we were pleasantly surprised at the initial quality we saw in these little 4-stroke machines. While our expectations had been low because of the price, we were soon finding ourselves quite pleased with our purchase!
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Redcat SFX-110
The very first thing we took note of was the quality of the plastics - they are thicker and nicer than we had expected them to be and they add much to the looks of these little quads. We think the esthetics of the 110’s can’t be beat – they have aggressive styling and look very similar to the popular Yamaha Raptor designs. We noted the plastics were secured well with no flopping or noise present, and were very shiny with unique slits molded into the rear fenders. Adding to the looks of the SX is a good looking, functional black bumper that is well proportioned to the rest of the quad.
Upon further inspection, we found the Kazuma seats to be quite comfortable with a nice gripper feel to them, and with a seat height of 26.3”, our test riders wouldn’t feel too tall or too short while sitting on their quads.
The footpegs on the Kazuma’s are wide and very big compared to other mini quad pegs, and we were happy to see that small nerf bars come standard on all Kazuma 110-SX’s. These nerfbars, in combination with the full plastic heelguards that attach to the footpegs, offer a great deal of protection for a young rider’s feet - there is no way a small foot can slip off the peg and under a tire with these items in place.
The Kazuma controls and handlebars are a good size for young rider’s hands, and while the handbrake seemed stiff and hard to pull for the front brakes, the rear wheel foot brake seemed very easy to use and is positioned well.
Some other items we noticed on the Kazuma that not all mini quads have are a surprisingly loud horn, as well as headlights that actually work. The button for the horn is mounted on the handlebar controls near the headlight/start switch and can be easily accessed while riding without having to look for it. The headlights, which are mounted up under the front plastics are easily removable and have hi/low beam capabilities.
Light and Horn controls are only a thumbs reach away and very accessible
LED gauge mounted on the handlebars illuminates the current gear selected
The feature we had looked for and appreciated the most on a mini quad was the clutchless heel- to- toe shifter that comes standard on all 110-SX’s. We like the fact that a young rider could learn how and when to shift with a transmission like this, without having to worry about the complications of a clutch. The transition from this type of shifting to a fully manual quad should be much easier for a young rider to master. Additionally, there is a handy LED gauge mounted just above the gas cap that indicates what gear the quad is in. The face of the gauge is just a thin, clear plastic, but it does the job.
The tires that come with the Kazumas are more square shaped than most mini quad tires; less balloonlike and more similar to the shape of an MX tire. The tread is an interesting design and looked like it would do well in all types of terrain.
Kazuma / Redcat have square shaped, MX style, rear tires instead of the typical ballon tires found of many other mini's
Nerf bars, wide foot pegs, and foot/mud guards are standard equipment along with a heel-to-toe shifter
The 108cc, air-cooled 4-stroke engine and chassis looked typical for a youth quad, with a beefy looking chain driving the rear wheels. With a top speed claimed at 35-40 mph, this 7hp engine should offer plenty of fun for newer riders as well as for more experienced ones. The engine cover has a nice fit and finish to it and has a small window that allows you to see the oil color and level without having to check the dipstick – we felt that this was a handy feature.
The suspension on the Kazuma 110’s is fairly standard with a single a-arm design up front and a capable looking swingarm at the rear. The Kazuma measures 31.3” wide, which is not very wide if you are looking for a race quad, but is quite sufficient for the type of riding our test riders were going to do. The stock shocks that come with the SX are single rate, simple shocks without much travel. This is the only thing that we weren’t terribly impressed with, but after seeing many other smaller, off-brand quads and their suspension, this seems to be pretty standard. The stock suspension is definitely not race suspension, but is fine for casual trail, track or dune riding.
THE TEST RIDES
Peewee track
Marlee & Matthew Adcock were ATVriders.com Test Riders
The first place we took our new Kazumas was Speedworld MX Park, in Surprise, AZ – the same location that hosts Round 1 of the WORCS series and will also be hosting two rounds of the 2006 ITP Quadcross series. Speedworld has a fun Peewee track that allows quads, and this is where we headed to give our Kazumas their first test run.
Our test riders, Marlee and Matthew Adcock, accurately represent the demographic that the Kazuma’s seem to target – they are entry level, young riders who just like to ride their quads and have a good time in many riding different environments.
Once our riders were geared up with the proper safety equipment, they headed out onto the track for some fun!
The 110-SX’s had no problems negotiating the table tops, turns, and single jumps that make up the pewee track. It didn’t take long for each rider to learn when to shift to get the best response from their machine.
While the heel-to-toe shifters can be somewhat noisy and require a firm shifting action, they are easily learned and work well. This type of transmission allows the rider more control over their speed and power when going up and down hills than an automatic transmission does. The 110’s low end torque was admirable in the lower gears going up the steeper hills. The 19x10x8 rear tires hooked up well on the hard packed track surface, but still allowed for some sliding action, much to our test riders delight. However, when the track became muddy after being watered, the stock tires had a harder time gaining traction.
As suspected upon our first inspection, the front drum brakes on the SX 110 were found to be lacking sufficient stopping power on their own by our test riders, and the hand lever was hard to pull. However, the rear foot operated drum brake had plenty of stopping power and was very easy to use.
Kazuma / Redcat ATVs are great trail machines, but the suspension will quickly reach its limits on an MX track
One thing most kids like to do is test out their quad’s suspension on the jumps and bumps, and our riders were no different! This is the one area where we found the Kazuma’s to be their weakest as far as performance goes. The simple, stiff front shocks were sufficient to help absorb bumps and ruts to a point, but when our riders hit larger bumps at a higher speed, the ride was jarring and rough and they had to work to control their bars. We decreased the amount of air in the tires, and this helped smooth out their overall ride quite a bit, but it didn’t help the generally stiff suspension that we found unsuitable for any serious jumping. Despite the lack of performance we found in the suspension, our riders still had a great time and it was hard to pull them off of the track at the end of the day.
When asked what he liked the best about the SX so far, our youngest test rider, Matthew said “The horn! It’s so loud!” When asked the same question, Marlee stated she liked how the quads looked the most, but the horn was cool, too. “It makes Matthew get out of my way!” she exclaimed. “He’s too slow sometimes!”
Dunes
The stock ties are very vertisle for many different terrians, but aftermarket tires may be a better choice duning
We wanted the opportunity to test our new Kazumas in several different riding environments, so we loaded up the quads and the kids and headed to the ISDRA for a little playtime in the sand. Our expectations weren’t too high due to the fact we hadn’t had any time to find out if anyone makes a paddle tire that will bolt up to a 110-SX, but we figured we’d see how they did with their stock tires in the smaller dunes near our camp.
Our test riders were new to the sand but quickly learned where and when to stop in the dunes so they wouldn’t get stuck, and how to keep up their momentum in the softer sand. Our riders started out on the sandy trails around camp and quickly progressed into the smaller dunes with more challenging terrain. The Kazumas handled the smaller uphills and downhills with ease, even with their stock tires, and our riders had fun making new tracks in the fresh sand. While testing the traction limits of the stock SX’s, we led our riders into slightly larger, softer dunes, and there we found that if the hill was too long or too steep, the stock tires would simply lose traction part way up the hill and the rider would have to turn around. This is also an area where our riders were very happy to have a reverse gear, as there were several places they got stuck, but when put into reverse, the quad was easily backed out.
Because the 4-stroke engines don’t use much gas, our riders were able to spend hours blazing their own trails through the small dunes and sand washes surrounding our camp. All too soon, we had to pack up and head home.
FINAL THOUGHTS
To be honest, at first we really didn’t expect much from a quad that cost under $1k, was hard to spell and was sold under more than one name. However, after watching our new test riders have fun on their Kazuma’s in several different riding environments, and having zero mechanical or electrical issues to deal with or ruin the fun factor, we have a new respect for this inexpensive, fun, entry level machine. We also couldn’t resist throwing a leg over these quads and giving them our own test ride in the pits at Glen Helen during our last ITP race. It was here we found yet another use for the 110-SX - they make a terrific pit quad! They are quiet and allow one to sneak off at all hours of the night to use the facilities, TP someone’s trailer or just check out the scenery. They also get you to the registration table a whole lot quicker!
In summary, we feel that we made the best choice possible while looking to find a quad that was inexpensive and easy to maintain. The Kazuma 110-SX has the safety features that are important to us, it is fun and easy to ride, and most of all, the kids can have fun riding this quad no matter where we take them. ATV kazuma parts

Why is this a super safe machine for the little ones?
1. Adjustable throttle limiter so you can adapt engine power as his skill develops. Slow it down if you need to, until you, or your little atver is comfortable...
2. rear safety cut off...you can attach a rope or string to the rear safety cutoff on this machine and follow your little atver and if, for any reason, you want to halt the movement of the machine, just pull the string, and the machine cuts off, very nice feature...
3. If you also want to slow it down, put it in first gear, and take off the shifter. Only one bolt holds it on, they you can limit your little one to a nice slow speed, and you can put the shifter back on as his skill develops. There is not a manual clutch & it will start in all gears.
4. nice large easy to use foot brake..no confusing hand brakes for the little ones.
5. nice simple operation. For all practical purposes, you can just gas it and go.

ATV Buyer's Guide
Did You Know?
* Dealers sell almost half of all new ATVs to first-time buyers
* More than 1,500 new units per day nationwide
* Approximately 80% of the ATVs sold nationwide are utility-class machines
* Older people are using ATVs to rediscover areas of the outdoors that had become inaccessible to them

Our automatic models do away with complicated gear shifting. This means they are easily accessible for people of all ages and disabilities. It also means you can spend more time on riding and enjoying yourself, and less time managing the vehicle.
* For People of All Ages and Sizes. Not only are our vehicles easy to manage, but we have a wide range of sizes to accommodate a variety of users - young and old, small and tall.
* Efficient and Cost-effective. As utility vehicles, ATVs have proven they are more efficient and cost-effective than their larger and more expensive counterparts. With access to a wide array of attachments, ATVs can be used to haul, spread and a variety of other applicable activities.
* They're Fun! 70% of ATV riders use them for family recreation activity. It's a great way to get the family together, out in the country air, and active.
Things to Consider
* Look for a machine that features maintenance-free suspension and an easily accessible oil filter and filler.
* Consider your cargo capacity needs. While you may not need support for large cargo initially, it's a great feature and one that can greatly increase the opportunities for ATV use. Engine power will also determine how mobile your ATV will be under heavy load.
* Ride and Comfort of your ATV is important and you should always look for ATV's that fit your physical size. An ATV that is too large or too small can be dangerous and uncomfortable.
* A larger fuel tank capacity will give you longer use in between re-fills. You can expect 80 miles plus to the gallon on most ATVs. Your use and cargo load will affect your mileage.
* Choose an ATV that fits your style. Our ATVs come in a variety of styles and colors to make sure you feel and look good on your ATV.

1. Have student sit on ATV.
2. Instruct student to keep his/her eyes straight ahead while you slowly push the vehicle from behind. This will give the student the “feel” of riding a moving vehicle.
3. As you push the ATV, instruct your student to steer straight ahead and perform operations such as stopping the vehicle and turning OFF the engine switch while moving. Watch your student closely to make sure she/he is operating the controls correctly and without looking at them.
4. As you approach the end of the practice area, tell your student to stop the vehicle. You should drag the rear end of the ATV around so you can push it straight ahead in the opposite direction.
5. Practice with the engine OFF until your student gets the “feel” of using the brakes and can stop the vehicle and turn OFF the engine switch without hesitation and without looking at the controls.
STEP 4: ADJUST THE SPEED LIMITER TO SLOW NOW.
Next start the ATV’s engine and have the student practice starting off, riding in a straight line and stopping with the vehicle under power. Walk alongside the ATV and hold the engine cutout switch cord or have the student ride back and forth between you and another supervising adult. Make sure your student:
1. Opens the throttle gently when starting off.
2. Releases the throttle and applies the brakes in sequence when stopping.
3. Becomes aware of the distance it takes the vehicle to stop when the engine switch is turned OFF while the vehicle is moving.
As you approach the end of the practice session, you should again tell the rider to stop the vehicle and get off so you can turn it around for him/her. Practice this exercise until your student can start off, accelerate, cruise and stop correctly and confidently.
STEP 5: TURNING:
After your student has learned to ride the ATV in a straight line and can stop it at will, you should teach the student how to turn the vehicle. Explain the proper body movements for turning and let the student PRACTICE FIRST WITH THE ENGINE OFF as you push the vehicle from behind. When turning, watch to make sure your student:
1. Shifts his/her weight slightly forward and supports his/her weight on the outer footrest.
2. Leans his/her upper body into the direction of the turn, pressing down with the opposite leg.
When the rider is able to properly turn the ATV in both directions with the engine OFF, she/he should practice turning with the vehicle under power. Again, make sure that the throttle limiter is adjusted to provide a low maximum speed capability. Watch closely to make sure the rider is using the proper technique. The rider should practice turning until s/he can do so correctly and confidently.
STEP 6: PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER
When your student has mastered the basic riding maneuvers in the previously listed steps, she/he should practice them all together. Instruct the student to perform various maneuvers such as turning right, turning left, stopping, etc. Vary the order of these maneuvers so the student will not anticipate what s/he will be asked to do next. Practice this exercise until you are confident that the rider has mastered all the basic maneuvers. Using this procedure will help the first-time rider learn the most basic riding techniques. To become a skilled rider, your student will need a great deal of practice and continuing instruction in addition to completing these introductory steps. After all the riding techniques have been mastered, you can adjust the throttle limiter to provide higher speed capabilities in keeping with the rider’s skill and experience.
Choose a 50cc ATV should come with a special semi-automatic transmission that can start in any gear. It is recommended that you start the ATV in second or third gear with the speed limiter set to the slowest speed. Have you child ride the ATV and DO NOT have them use the foot gear shifter.
As your child learns control and basics, you should slowly increase the speed limiter to a speed that you are comfortable with. There is no need to teach the child to use the foot shifter until they are ready.
Riding the ATV in second or third gear all the time will not hurt the ATV. It can be used similar to an automatic transmission, while it may not start out very fast, they can reach your approved speed while staying in any gear. (We do not recommend that you leave the unit in first gear using this method. We have found that third gear is optimum).
For children that have little or no experience with ATV riding, it is also recommended that you remove the gear shift lever altogether. This will prevent your child from accidentally shifting gears, which could cause an accident. You can re-install the gear shifter at a later date once you feel comfortable with your child’s ability to ride and shift gears.
The 1960s: Prototyping the ATC
